It’s time for me to upgrade from my old iPhone 5S. I’m pretty much set on getting some version of the new Samnsung Galaxy S7, but I’m just not sure which one.

The two versions, the standard S7 and the S7 Edge, don’t really have much difference aside from the screen. The standard S7 has a flat 5.1 inch screen, whereas the S7 Edge had the 5.5 inch screen that rolls over the sides of the phone. I think the screen on the Edge looks pretty cool, but I’m wondering if the novelty is really worth it.

Due to the shape of the screen, I wouldn’t be able to get a good case for it. And I really do need a good case considering how clumsy I am with phones and the fact that I have two kids under 3 that love to test the limits of how sturdy things are.

For those of you that have had the S6 or S6 Edge, what made you pick one over the other? Or for those who are more in-the-know with this stuff, any recommendations of one over the other? A pre-runner Crown Vic LTD for your time.

I have the S6 edge. It’s pretty durable in practice but make sure to get a good screen protector. The edge isn’t really useful in everyday life, but I only bought it because it gave the phone such a cool look. Also, I’m very angry because I just got it and the S7 came out.

the edge is virtually pointless, but it’s cool nonetheless. my main problem with the regular s7 is that the standard sides feel somewhat lackadaisical in design in my opinion. on the s6 when I held it in hand, the non edge sides of the s6 felt rather cheap and flimsy, but that’s just me. the edge honestly makes it feel more premium, and I think that may be a problem with the new s7 too, but I've only held the s7 edge in my hands.

I’m leaning towards the non-edge. The form factor looks better to me, and 5.5" phones feel insanely huge to me.

I want to see both the S7 and the HTC 10 in person though before I decide, which means I need to wait a few more months:

I have an iPhone 6 Plus. So I recommend you to get that because Apple master race. But I’ve been thinking that the only ever truly awesome edge phone from them was the Note Edge from a couple years ago. That had a full edge to the side for seeing notifications from your bedside or a ruler. The new S whatever half edges just cause more inconvenience and problems when it cracks.

I will wait for the HTC 10, or the nexus, Samsung quality has gone downhill for me, screen flickering, crap battery life, I had a few since the original note, enough is enough. My wife loves her HTC, I have been ok with the LG g4, but its getting old, and I don’t like the G5

S7 edge is useless, but it actually looks not half bad. The S7 looks like something straight out of 2010 for me.

The G5 looks like a melted bar of soap. It is the mobile equivalent of a 2nd-gen MR2.

I have an HTC One (M7) which I like a lot, except for the fact that it has succumb to the horrible purple camera issue. Aside from that though, the build quality seems excellent, and the phone stands up to all sorts of abuse without needing a case. I seriously wish they’d just put out an updated revision, the M8, M9, and A9 all feel inferior in my hand (though they of course have better performance).

Good screen protector is gonna be the first purchase after getting the phone, lol. That’s why I’m leaning more towards the standard S7. I can get an Otter Box or a Lifeproof case for that. There aren’t any real case options for the S7 Edge yet. And I’m gonna need a good case from day one...

I was considering the iPhone 6S, but the GS7 outperforms it by a bit. Plus, it’s almost time for the iPhone 7 to come out. I had nothing but Android prior to this iPhone, and miss the full customization and ability to manipulate everything without jailbreaking it. I think I’m done with the Apple hipster race for now.

I think that’s kinda where I’m stuck. The Edge is completely pointless, but it’s a smidge bigger, and it’s the “fancier” model. So why by the standard S7 when you can get the Edge ... Just because it’s more expensive doesn’t mean it’s nicer. Gotta keep telling myself that.

Oh definitely. Androids outperform Apple all day. The only reason I stay with Apple is cause my family is all Apple and iMessage reasons. I went to my 6 Plus from a Note 2 and I definitely miss the customization. But there was a time when I would get new ROMs every week and I just can’t handle the freedom with so many things I can change. HAHA. I’m considering a 7 Plus (or the rumored 2 camera iPhone Pro) that will come out later this year. We shall see in 6 months how each of us are doing with our respective phones. Good luck with the choice!

I’m leaning towards the non-Edge as well. With the kids, I really do have to have a Lifeproof or Otter Box case. And I can’t get one for the Edge.

And I didn’t particularly care for my last couple HTCs. Granted the last two were the Incredible 2 and the Thunderbolt, so those were ages ago. But they both crapped out on me after a year or so.

Yeah, I don’t remember much about the Incredible 2, but pretty much everything I heard about the Thunderbolt was awful. Too bad too, as the contemporary HTC Evo 4G was the best phone of that timeframe. Shows the folly of building carrier specific devices.

If I could wait that long, and resist the killer deal Verizon is offering with the S7 right now (free Samsung Gear 2 if I order online), I might be holding off for the 7 Pro too. Besides music, the thing I used my phone for most is the camera, lol.

And I will definitely miss iMessage. And probably Facetime too. Oh well, that’s what Skype is for, right?

My brother-in-law got the Evo 4G while I still had my Incredible 2 (after I killed the Thunderbolt). I really liked it, but I was just so fed up with HTC by that point that I ended up getting the iPhone once I was eligible for my upgrade.
